Black Horse Floorcloths

Floorcloths for Everyone

Our objective at Black Horse Floorcloths is as follows...

To make a beautiful and practical art form which had been obscured by time more accessible to today's consumer by offering quality, affordable floorcloth area rugs and table accessories in a variety of styles from Early American to Contemporary.

  History of the Floorcloth

The use of floorcloths as painted decorative floor coverings began in early eighteenth-century Britain, and were initially used by the wealthy to decorate entry ways, dining rooms, and hallways.  Some were also used under dining tables to protect from spills. They began to be used in America as early as the Revolutionary war. Initially most were imported from England, but soon there were domestic makers as well, and the art form remained popular until around 1860 with the invention of linoleum. There was a revival in the 1950's through the popularization of authentic  American crafts and the restoration of historical homes.

  Floorcloth Table Accessories

A beautiful and practical alternative to traditional fabric table runners and place mats. They are sealed with three layers of a water resistant varnish that allows you to simple wipe up crumbs and spills. The hand painted designs add immeasurable interest to your dinner table and are sure to draw the curiosity and admiration of any guest!

 Floorcloth Area Rugs

Are great in all high traffic areas such as in front of entry ways, bathtubs and kitchen sinks. The three layers of sealer make them resistant to water and mud, and cleanup is a snap! Just sweep and damp mop as you would the rest of your floor! They lie so low to the floor, your door will swing right over it without catching!  They are also great for people with allergies as they don't collect dust!
